At Fundación Impronta, we believe every child deserves to discover the power of reading. That’s why, in partnership with the Alianza por la Educación and with the valuable support of Grupo Mercantil, we’re running the Reading Explorers program (Exploradores del Lecturas). It has already reached 109 schools in 7 regions of Venezuela, impacting more than 4,000 children in vulnerable communities.
Reading, play, and emotion in every session
Through stories, games, and playful activities, the children become explorers of imaginary worlds, strengthening their self-esteem and developing a reading habit in a fun and meaningful way. This after-school program makes productive use of their free time.
The session facilitators are given a clear, flexible guide with teaching strategies and activities. They also receive an “explorer’s bag” —with books, games, and school supplies— which has become a key tool for sparking curiosity and enthusiasm in the children.
Evaluation by coordinators
Coordinators from various foundations and partners of the Alianza por la Educación evaluated the program and agreed that Reading Explorers is “wonderful,” “motivating,” and “enriching.” The majority gave the highest score for utility, relevance, and quality.
They also highlighted how the facilitators were empowered with new teaching and reading promotion strategies, unleashing all their creativity with dramatizations, riddles, and stories created by the children themselves.
Challenges we face with commitment
Although we face challenges such as connectivity in rural areas, transporting materials, and family participation, our teams have responded with ingenuity and commitment: rescheduling visits, using local resources, creating educational circles, and strengthening communication between schools and coordinators.
Every Reading Explorers (Exploradores de Lecturas) session is an opportunity to plant an unforgettable story. As some of the coordinators said: “The children eagerly await the activities and share every step of their progress,” and “Thank you for planting an unforgettable story in every heart.”
